It is used to treat some sexually transmitted infections (e.g. gonorrhoea and syphilis), meningitis, brain abscesses, gangrene, blood infections, anthrax, tetanus, diphtheria, listeria (a type of food poisoning), leptospirosis (an infection from animals), pasteurellosis (an infection following animal bites)
